Today, social media provides new ways to connect and build virtual institutions, enabling us to address societal problems of planetary scale in a time-critical fashion. More significantly, advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer optimization help us reimagine human problem-solving.

The initial design was based on prototypes developed at the MIT Media Lab and by Learning Machine, now Hyland Credentials. For ongoing development, this open-source project actively encourages other collaborators to get involved. This course is for students wishing to explore blockchain technology's potential use—by entrepreneurs and incumbents—to change the world of money and finance. The course begins with a review of Bitcoin and an understanding of the commercial, technical, and public policy fundamentals of blockchain technology, distributed ledgers, and smart contracts. The class then continues on to MIT’s Digital Currency Initiative – A research-driven approach to blockchain The DCI’s position between academia and industry, their policy on conflicts of interest, and their most fascinating research topics. The workshop concludes with a talk by Joi Ito, director of the MIT Media Lab, followed by demos with the workshop teams, a panel discussion with partner companies and guests, and a reception.
